A powerful blast has hit the Bab Touma neighborhood in the old part of Damascus, a state run TV-channel reports.
The explosion comes as UN peace envoy Lakhdar Brahimi is visiting the Syrian capital for talks.
The explosion reportedly took place in front of a police station. Smoke is rising above what is believed to be a car bomb explosion, witnesses say.
The area was busy at the time of the explosion, with people returning from Sunday prayers. No information of casualties is available yet.
